Collection of Ritual Narration Material of the Dagara Bagr Secret Society

The material in this Collection comprises audio recordings, audio visual recordings and images documenting the structured narratives recited within the Bagr ritual context between May 1994-Nov 2002. The ritual narratives solidified over time to consist of two categories of compositions that were only spoken sequentially in ritual context. The two categories were the black bagr and the white bagr narrative compositions. The black bagr was one long narrative audition (the longest oral narrative composition ever to be identified in Africa and spoken continuously by one voice). The white bagr narration was further sub-divided into four narrative sessions, namely, the white bagr of black beans, the white bagr of white beans, the white bagr of bambara beans and the white bagr dance. These rituals are performed out of public view in the large homesteads of the few remaining Dagara kin members not yet touched by Catholicism or modern education. The original material is a combination of audio cassettes, VHS audio-video mini tapes and photographs. Read more here

African Sacred and Religius Objects: Masks Collection

Object Figure 3_1 Large Facial Mask of death and dying. Dimensions H 94; B42
Object Figure 3_1 Large Facial Mask of death and dying. Dimensions H 94; B42

"Object Figs 3.1 and 3.2 are part of the collection of art objects that Dennis Duisters (Maaseik, Belgium) originally acquired from Ghana and transported to Belgium. Altogether they suggest a particular structure and meaning of African facial masks. Their dimensions (Object Fig. 3.1 is 94cm in height and 42 cm broad) suggest that they were not produced to be used as costume in ritual ceremonies but likely to be consecrated as religious and sacred objects" (Read more)

Object Figure 3_2 Long facial mask of death and dying. Dimensions H 106; B30

"The physical structure of the human body, in this case the head and the face, is used to reveal ideas held in African religion, society and culture. The head and face are divided into several spatial domains, beginning with the top of head itself. The question arises whether it is decked with a headgear or portrayed as consumed by a beast of nature" (See Tengan 2022)

Object Figure 3_6 Mask as Healing Device

"These are three fetishes1 figures acquired together from a village in Dagbon, north-eastern Ghana. This first consists of a mask and a human figure on the head of the mask as basic structure before the addition of all other essentials. The human figure is wearing a headgear that also has a long tail. The eyes are blinded with a red strip of cloth." (See (Tengan 2022)
